About the Item

Box of mid-19th century compasses, housed in their original tuia burl box, nickel-plated brass and ivory instruments, velvet and satin interior, lock and hinges in brass. Embossed on the satin inside the lid printed in gold is the name of the company that made them W.H. HARLING Mathematical Instrument Manufacturer 40 Hatton Garden London. Box complete with: engraved boxwood ruler for equivalence, wooden rulers with double scale, some balusters for small circles, two compasses with fixed points of different sizes, two small compasses, several tiralinee with ivory handles, etc. Bon état. Closed box measures 20x16x5- 7.9x5.9x2 inches. There are tools that are fundamental to all scientists and technicians, whether astronomers, navigators, surveyors, engineers, or architects. Questi specialisti hanno bisogno di eseguire disegni precisi, spesso in scala, di compiere misurazioni su carte e piante e di fare copie in scala. Fundamental drawing tools have a long history, dating back to Greek culture, which began to study spatial relationships and the shapes of bodies; geometry therefore is the first science to be rationally organized as a science of figures.
