Contina AG Mauren Curta I Mechanical Calculator

About the Item

An important CURTA Type I mechanical calculator by Contina Ltd. Mauren. Made in Liechtenstein, manufactured in september 1968. Serial number 72161. Black body with 8 digits for data entry, 6 for revolution counter and 11 for result counter and rectangular knobs with teeth. In perfect working condition. Original cardboard box included The CURTA Type I also includes the following documents: - Original customer's order with envelope. - "Computing Examples for the CURTA Calculating Machine" brochure. - "Your CURTA Calculator" instruction manual. The CURTA machine is a mechanical calculator designed by Curt Herzstark. Its compact design is conceived to be held in the user's hand. Herzstark got his key patent in 1938. Its development was interrupted by the Nazis during World War II. As the son of a Jewish father, Herzstark was sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp. It was thanks to the CURTA project that he was able to skip the horrors of the detention center to continue on his research. By the end of the war, he moved to Austria, where he met Prince Franz Joseph of Liechtenstein, who showed interest on the production of the CURTA. The Contina AG Mauren was formed for the CURTA's production.
