1920s Art Deco Marathon Red and Black Enamel Combination Cigarette Case and Lighter
This rare 1920s Art Deco Marathon cigarette case and lighter is a striking example of Jazz Age design and craftsmanship. The front is decorated in a bold asymmetrical Art Deco pattern, streamlined linear geometry flowing into a lower-right partial circle rendered in vivid red and black enamel and highlighted by crisp chrome lines. The back is finished in glossy black enamel. The case opens smoothly on its chrome hinges, easily operable with just one hand.
The interior showcases a classic engine-turned design, fitted with two spring-loaded hinged arms to hold cigarettes securely. At the top, the case is stamped “Marathon, Pat. Applied For”, identifying it as an early production model of this innovative combination design.
Marathon was one of the foremost American makers of novelty cigarette cases and lighters in the 1920s and 1930s, celebrated for their airbrushed and enameled Art Deco motifs. Their designs embodied the glamour of the Jazz Age, aligning them with other premier makers of luxury smoking accessories such as Evans, Ronson, and Zippo. While Ronson dominated the market with innovative lighter mechanisms, and Evans became known for refined metal cases, Marathon distinguished itself through bold, modernist patterns and Deco styling, making their surviving examples highly sought after by collectors of period smoking accessories and design.
Condition:
The flint screw appears to be missing. The enamel overall remains intact with only light general wear expected of a 100-year-old piece. There is a ¼-inch patch of textured enamel on the back. The case opens and closes smoothly,
