American pottery still bank in the shape of a pig, used for saving coins (usually pennies) to encourage children the importance of thrift. Pottery still banks are somewhat scarce since the typical way to remove coins was to smash the bank open, albeit, with this particular example, perhaps a knife was used for coin removal (note the wear to the coin slot---see images) or perhaps the additional wear is also from many coins having been deposited. The bank is in good all original condition , from an unknown potter (unmarked) circa 1880's, and probably a variant of #633 "Two Toned Pig" in Andy Moore's "The Penny Bank Book" written in 1984 when collecting pottery banks...

In near mint and all original condition this vintage mechanical bank appeals to both sailing enthusiasts and bank collectors; perhaps a collector of "cat" memorabelia as well. The theme depicts two sailors riding their boat in full sail. It is quite substantial in both size and weight. To operate, (with the lever pushed all the way in from the left); place a coin vertically above the left arm of the sailor in red; from the right; push the lever all the way in. This wonderful, charming and pleasing action wind up toy was manufactured by HTC Mikuni Company of Japan, circa 1950s. It is made completely of tin, and is colorfully lithographed in green, blue, white, and flesh tones, with a tin red hat. The attached key is wound to start the action, which has "Dandy" walking along (back and forth), while raising his feet alternatively, all the while raising his eyes up and down, while removing and placing back his hat; holding his cane close to his side. Please note the Mikuni trademark in black on the lower, rear right leg with the letter "M" simulating a horse (see image. Also marked "Made in Japan" at the base (see image). The toy works...

Made of heavy cast aluminum and hand painted, this sturdy, finely detailed still bank depicts a whimsical "Santa Riding a Polar Bear". It is brightly painted in red and white, with multiple colors to the toys in the pack on his back. Santa holds on to a cast rein as he sits side saddle on the polar bear. Coins are deposited in the slot provided behind Santa's left shoulder (see image). Coins are removed by undoing the bank and turning the slotted screw. This screw has never been turned and the bank has never been taken apart to remove coins. This American made toy savings bank was made in 1988 (see image) by the Reynolds Toy Company of Falls Church, Virginia. They specialized in the manufacture of well made cast metal penny banks. You will not see them all over the place as only 75 examples were produced. This is stamped #14 (see image). The bank is in mint condition. "Chief Big Moon" cast iron mechanical bank is one of the few western theme banks in the mechanical bank collecting field. It was manufactured in 1899 by the J. & E. Stevens Company in Cromwell, Connecticut. This is one of the favorite banks of most collectors because, in addition to attractive "shelf appeal", the action of the bank incorporates the element of surprise. To operate; a coin is placed under the fish in front of the pond. Press the lever on the top, middle, side, of the bank. The frog will spring out of the pond, attempting to grab the fish, as the Indian (who is sitting in front of a fire) raises it out of the reach of the frog. While this is going on, the coin drops into the bank. To reset the bank for another deposit, lift up the pond and place the frog back underneath (look at "before" and "after" images).
