Vintage S Monogram Cast Glass Ice Cube Bookends by Blenko, Pair

About the Item

Handsome pair of heavy mid-century cast glass ice-cube shaped bookends by Blenko with scripted capital S monogram. Front and back are polished smooth and all four sides are textured. In good vintage condition. There is an internal break in the upper corner of one, as documented in photos and video. The surfaces around the break are actually smooth on the exterior, and in all honesty, I didn't even notice the break until I got the piece under the bright lights. Prices accordingly. Designed by Joel Philip Myers, who was the design director at Blenko throughout most of the 1960s. Myers earned a degree in advertising design from Parsons School of Design in 1954, and he attained his BFA and MFA in ceramics from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in the early 1960s. In 1963, Myers was hired as design director at Blenko Glass Company in Milton, West Virginia, where he taught himself glassblowing through observation and practice. Myers left Blenko in 1970 to found the glass department at Illinois State University, where he taught for nearly 30 years before retiring in 1997. Myers is known for simple yet powerful glass forms that combine color and form in distinctive ways. 5" x 2.5" x 5" each
