Antique Reddish Brown Lacquered Elm Trunk with Brass Lock and Raised Base

About the Item

This antique Chinese lacquered elm trunk showcases the warmth and craftsmanship of late Qing or early Republican-era cabinetry from the early 20th century, with a hand-rubbed lacquer finish in rich reddish brown tones. The exterior features a minimalist yet stately form, accented by a circular iron lock plate and matching side handles, typical of traditional Chinese storage chests. A subtle linear band carved near the base offers a restrained decorative touch without detracting from the clean silhouette. The hinged lid opens to reveal a spacious, brown lacquered interior with exposed panel construction. This piece functions well as a coffee table, storage bench, or entryway statement and brings a quietly aged elegance to both rustic and contemporary spaces. Light distressing and tonal variation in the lacquer reflect the age and use of the trunk, estimated to date from the early 20th century. Solidly built and visually grounding, it is both functional and collectible.
