Goyard Wardrobe Trunk, circa 1920

About the Item

An unusual Goyard wardrobe trunk with original chevron pattern canvas covering, brass fittings and original cotton lined interior providing hanging space. Circa 1920. The proportion of the trunk means that, if it was laid on it’s back, it would make a great coffee table. We have kept the cotton lining original but the trunk could be relined if the customer so wished. Dimensions: (Standing Upright) 56.5 cm/22¼ inches (width) x 48.5 cm/19? inches (depth) x 117 cm/46? inches (height). In 1853 François Goyard took over from Moral - a trunk maker who was trunk maker to the heir to the French throne. He changed the name to La Maison Goyard and opened at 233 rue Saint Honoré. In 1892 the chevron motif appears on coated canvas for the first time. Between 1894-1924 there was a program of expansion within the company, additional stores open in Europe, including Biarritz and Monte Carlo: with department store concessions opening in the U.S, England, Belgium, Spain and Russia. By the early 20th century Goyard luggage had won numerous medals in exhibitions across the globe, becoming ever more popular in high society across Europe. Edmond also introduced an entire department for “cats, dogs and monkeys” while at the helm of the company. Dimensions: 112 cm/44 inches x 56 cm/22 inches x 57 cm/22½ inches. Bentleys are Members of LAPADA, the London and Provincial Antique Dealers Association.
