About the Item

This historically important, American leather clad document box, was made in Boston in the early nineteenth century. The box belonged to, Samuel Francis Smith (October 21, 1808 – November 16, 1895) whom was an American Baptist minister, journalist, and author. He is best known for having written the lyrics to "My Country Tis of Thee" first sung in 1832, which he entitled "America". The box is clearly marked not once twice or three times but four times as the property of Rev. Smith. Twice on the inside once on the underside and etched into the lock. Their obviously was much importance placed upon this box. The bits you see on the side are not lost to leather but are parts of nineteenth centurbeseels that were placed upon the box to guarantee it would not be opened during transportation. In addition to "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" first sunglasses in 1832 Smith wrote over 150 other hymns. In 1843, he teamed with Baron Stow to compile a Baptist hymnal, The Psalmist. Please examine all pics prior to purchase.
