This is an American made trunk from the 1880's - 1890's. It has a barrel top construction, with a cross slat design (this means the slats run from front to back on the top) and is covered with tin that once had a crystallized finish. This was a popular design that was produced for many years. Most American trunk companies were exporting trunks for sale all over the world from the 1860's on, and this particular trunk made it to France, where it was later found.
The trunk has inner compartments with decorative paper, and leather handles (1 missing). The antique plating and hardware is rusted, leaving it with a very interesting patina. The decorative motifs are stylized fleur-de-lys, palmettes, and rocaille motifs. There is an old padlock...
