Antique Wall / Corner Coat Rack w Carved Rams & Embossed Leather by M.J. Slager

About the Item

Unique and highly decorative, work of art coat rack. When we find an antique that is this good in terms of its design AND in terms of the quality of the workmanship then the first thing we do is to look for a signature. And we were really (and pleasantly) surprised to find the signature of MJ Slager in the far right, bottom corner. Only once before have we seen and owned and sold another stunning antique by this highly skilled artist. And when you realize that there have never been any other pieces of this artist available on the internet anywhere (apart from the stunning folding screen that we sold via 1stdibs and that you can see in image 19 of this listing) then you will understand how special it was for us that this coat rack by MJ Slager too landed on our path. Thinking of the odds of this happening, we can only describe it as a blessing. Like we described in that previous listing: when you look at the beauty, the detail and the overal workmanship it is unbelievable that such a skilled artist did not go on and have a bigger career. As more often has been the case here in Holland, maybe the first world war had something to do with it. So this antique coat rack is unique for more reasons than one, but one of them is the design. Antique corner coat racks really are a rare find and to have found one by someone as gifted as MJ Slager takes this piece to the next level. Not in the least, because the hand carved wooden rams head sculptures are among the best you will ever find and their patina is to die for as well. Just like the stunning folding screen by MJ Slager, this sizable and impressive coat rack too was all handmade in the Dutch Arts and Crafts era. However, from the striking embossed leather image/decoration (together with the rams heads) one can see that this unique antique is in the Renaissance Style. If you are into applied arts from the turn of the century then the sheer quality of the workmanship and the beauty of this unique coat rack is all that really matters. The amount of work that went into creating this intricate piece is incredible and the result is breath taking. Especially the colorful embossed leather decorations, including the perfect flowers and leafs, stand out beautifully against the darker oak background. So too do the original and strong, double bronze hooks. There are 10 of them so there is plenty of room for hanging your coats, scarves etc. There are a few truly minor imperfections, but overall it is safe to say that this unique and stunning Renaissance Revival coat rack is of museum quality and condition. Thanks to three, integrated and strong metal hooks on the back, safely wall mounting this coat rack tight on your wall can be done in a matter of minutes. If you need more reasons not to let this very rare and highly stylish antique get away from you: our price even includes perfect packing (in a custom made crate) and also worldwide shipping from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days. Maximum width x height x depth: 31 x 17.3 x 31 inches. Top shelf depth: 7.9 inches. Weight: 32.5 pounds lbs or 14.8 kilogram. We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for stylish yet practical and for the best craftsmanship of years gone by. Your purchases will be extremely well packaged and we look forward to serving you (again).

One of a kind coatrack with inlaid geometrical patterns and unique animal 'sculptures'. With the Arts & Crafts era being one of our favourites, we are always thrilled to find antiques from that era. Especially ones that we have never seen before and that we never expect to see again. We could not be more thrilled to find this unique and pure Dutch Arts and Crafts coat rack and the fact that it is in such amazing condition made us even happier. Finding top quality antiques in this incredibly condition is getting ever harder. This large size but undeep coat rack has an amazing patina, it comes with a set of four perfect brass hooks and several smaller ones as well. They all have the perfect patina and the circular mirror too is the original one and certainly in good enough condtion for you to check your good looks before leaving. However, what makes this remarkable Arts and Crafts work of beauty stand out from anything we ever saw is the combination of geometrical inlays and the unique animal 'sculptures'. Around the turn of the century (so between 1890 and 1910) many Europeans first started to learn about exotic animals in countries far away. The artisan whom created this work of art coat rack must have heard about or seen a first photo of a komodo dragon...

  • Sculptural Beechwood Functional Coat Rack Surfaced by Sho Ota
    By Sho Ota
    Located in Amsterdam, NL
At the intersection of industrial design and craftsmanship, Sho's sculptural works are both minimalistic and multi-layered. Every piece of collectible design is handmade by Sho himself. The development of the final form appears slowly through the making process and also depends on the wood – its appearance and texture can vary, making each piece unique. With all joints of the coat rack left visible, Sho Ota brings back the pleasure of contemplating real wood. With his design objects, Sho seeks to find an alternative to industrially - flattened wood and instead encourages us to discover the imperfection of this natural material. Sho Ota's special sence of color gives this wooden functional sculpture...
