McKay Co. Machine Age Art Deco Chrome and Painted Steel Magazine Holder

About the Item

Chrome and steel magazine holder by John Waring Carpenter for McKay Co. 1933 Worlds Fair Century of Progress. The McKay Company was founded by Pittsburgh Industrialist James McKay (1830-1906). From tire chains . In the early 20th century the company moved into auto bumpers. Flat band chrome type you would see on a model T . One bumpers started to get larger and take on various shapes the company began producing chrome furniture using that same flat band chromed steel . for the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago, the company furnished The McKay Lounge in The Hall of Science . Displaying McKay craft spring action, chromium plated metal furniture for porch, lawn, solarium, or the like: gliders, chairs, tables, smokers, stools, and accessories. In 1935 several designers were hired architect Salvatore Bevelacqua (1893-1982) to design furniture for McKay Craft , John Waring Carpenter (1885-1961) , Wiliam R. McGowen , and Percival Goodman (1904-1989).
