20th Century Pair of Decorated Pillows by Dan Rupe

About the Item

This pair of Mexican devotional pillows have been decorated in a collection of vintage mother of pearl buttons by contemporary artist Dan Rupe. Born in Indiana in 1952 this plain air painter only works from life. Well know for his very personal and colorful portaits and for his city scenes, rural landscapes and flower paintings Dan has had a prolific career and was a long-standing member of the Provincetown art community for many years and now has moved to Hudson New York and become a member of that towns vital artist community helping to bring life back to the once sleepy whaling town. These two Catholic devotional Mexican block printed cotton pillows have had a large collection of vintage pearl buttons sewn on by Dan making the halos not only three-dimensional but reflective as well. The pillow showing Jesus also has many horn as well as pearl buttons while Mary is done only in pearl buttons. These works made some 20 years ago, once were in the artist personal collection and formed part of his homes interior décor Deaccessioned in his last move they are now available and are truly one of a kind objects from the artist's hand combining found and collected material.

Early 20th Century Tibetan Thangka

This fine vintage painted work is richly filled with small figures surrounding a large central figure. All interspersed with clouds and religious symbols. The colors are deep but muted with time and age. The piece is newly bordered in rich Chinese silks edges in three strong colors setting the piece of nicely and making a strong impression. The Thangka is framed overall in a gilded simple frame.
