About the Item
Uzbek Velvet Ikat (Bakhmal)
Origin: Uzbekistan, likely Margilan or Bukhara
Date: Late 19th –
Technique: Warp ikat (abrbandi) with supplementary silk pile (bakhmal)
Materials: Silk pile on a silk-and-cotton foundation
Velvet Ikat (Bakhmal): Unlike flat ikats (adras), velvet ikats are created with supplementary silk pile threads, giving them a raised, soft surface. They were highly prized luxury fabrics in 19th–early 20th century Uzbekistan, especially in Bukhara and Margilan.
The raised silk pile enhances the vibrancy of the colors, creating a luminous surface that shifts with light and angle. Such textiles were treasured luxury items in Uzbek society, used for chapan (robes), wall hangings, and as dowry or ceremonial display pieces.
