BRAZILIAN FURNITURE

More often than not, vintage mid-century Brazilian furniture designs, with their gleaming wood, soft leathers and inviting shapes, share a sensuous, unique quality that distinguishes them from the more rectilinear output of American and Scandinavian makers of the same era.

Commencing in the 1940s and '50s, a group of architects and designers transformed the local cultural landscape in Brazil, merging the modernist vernacular popular in Europe and the United States with the South American country's traditional techniques and indigenous materials.

Key mid-century influencers on Brazilian furniture design include natives Oscar NiemeyerSergio Rodrigues and José Zanine Caldas as well as such European immigrants as Joaquim TenreiroJean Gillon and Jorge Zalszupin. These creators frequently collaborated; for instance, Niemeyer, an internationally acclaimed architect, commissioned many of them to furnish his residential and institutional buildings.

The popularity of Brazilian modern furniture has made household names of these designers and other greats. Their particular brand of modernism is characterized by an émigré point of view (some were Lithuanian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, and Italian), a preference for highly figured indigenous Brazilian woods, a reverence for nature as an inspiration and an atelier or small-production mentality.

Hallmarks of Brazilian mid-century design include smooth, sculptural forms and the use of native woods like rosewoodjacaranda and pequi. The work of designers today exhibits many of the same qualities, though with a marked interest in exploring new materials (witness the Campana Brothers' stuffed-animal chairs) and an emphasis on looking inward rather than to other countries for inspiration.

Midcentury ModeCoffee Table in Hardwood & Chrome by Sergio Rodrigues 1965 Brazil
By Sergio Rodrigues
Located in New York, NY
The “Amelia” coffee table has chrome-plated brass tube feet, solid jacaranda (Brazilian rosewood) and a rectangular crystal top of 20mm. The tables were originally designed in two shapes: Squared and rectangular which is the case of this piece For history buffs here it goes. Sergio Rodrigues was hired to develop furniture for some of the most important buildings of the newly built Brazilian, Brasilia, capital in the 60s. The Amelia model was used to decorate several buildings including the Palacio of Planalto (presidential office) and Congress as is shown in the images. This gorgeous coffee table would look great in any Mid-Century Modern, or postmodern type environment and the iconic design and Size will make of this coffee table an absolute must in everyone’s mid modern century collection. About Brazilian rosewood, also called Jacaranda, is perhaps one of the most beautiful woods in the world. It is regarded as one of the finest tone woods; hard, stiff, and highly resonant with a glass-like ring that sustains; it has a floral scent, like roses, thus the name. However, extensive overlogging over the past three centuries has virtually eliminated this tree from the Brazilian forests, so that today it is not supposed to be logged. The only Material that can be sold legally is old stock. By owning a vintage piece made of old Jacaranda, you’re not only getting a beautiful collectible but also helping this species to recuperate. Dimensions: H71, W117, D35 (cm) H28, W46.1, D13.8 (in) Literature (last images): • Oca’s manufacture manual showcasing the actual “Amelia” model • Vintage publication showcasing the rectangular version at the Palacio of Planalto in Brasilia • Acropole Magazine showcasing the table • Sergio Rodrigues book...

Daybed "Luxor" by Sergio Rodrigues for OCA, Brazil, 1965
By Sergio Rodrigues
Located in Antwerp, BE
Daybed; Luxor; Sergio Rodrigues; OCA; Brazil; 1965; 1960s Design; Bench; Brazilian Design; Wood; Furniture designer; Architect; Rio de Janeiro; Daybed "Luxor" designed by Sergio Rodrigues for OCA in Brazil, 1965. This well-designed daybed shows a solid construction of straight lines and round edges, which gives this piece a peaceful yet strong expression. A minimalistic frame with slats to support the mattress. The mattress is upholstered with high-quality off-white fabric, which looks great in contrast with the wooden frame featuring a warm colour and patina. This design is characterized by a minimal, clean approach that seeks to combine functionality with beauty. This Brazilian daybed is in excellent condition and would be a great addition to each mid-century modern interior. Sergio Rodrigues (Rio de Janeiro, 1927 - Rio de Janeiro, 2014) was a furniture designer and architect who broke away from paradigms to invent his own language in search of the Brazilian identity and harmoniously integrated the three areas in which he worked: architecture, design, and drawing. He joined the National School of Architecture of the University of Brazil (FNA) in 1947. In 1949, he worked as assistant professor for David Xavier de Azambuja, who, in 1951, invited him to participate in the elaboration of the project of the Civic Center of Curitiba, with the architects Olavo Redig de Campos (1906-1984) and Flávio Regis do Nascimento, through who he met, Lucio Costa (1902-1998). Rodrigues graduated in architecture in 1951. He moved to Curitiba, where he founded Móveis Artesanal Paranaense, in partnership with the Hauner brothers, who in 1954 hired him to lead the interior architecture section of the new company, Forma S.A, in São Paulo. It was during this tenure that he came into contact with other renowned designers such as Gregori...

Pair of Vintage Mocho Stools by Sergio Rodrigues, Brazilian Mid-Century, 1954
By Sergio Rodrigues
Located in New York, NY
The Mocho stool is one of the most iconic pieces designed by Sergio Rodrigues in 1954, before founding the Oca store. This pair is made of gorgeous solid Rosewood in very good vintage condition. As a free interpretation of a typical rural artifact, the cow-milking stool, the Mocho stool synthesizes both functions' simplicity: a piece that could be used as a seat and also support. The inspiration came from the circle, triangle, and trapezoid geometric forms and translated informality through its design resources. Mocho is a low piece on which the user has to crouch to sit, aided by a handle that allows it to be moved anywhere. Rodrigues sought a skilled lathe-operating carpenter and showed him the stool design. Right there, they produced the very first piece. It has been a success since then, arousing great interest from the public and other furniture manufacturers. In addition to being a mark in Sergio Rodrigues' history as a designer, the Mocho stool was the starting point of other furniture pieces, especially the Mole armchair and two other remarkable creations, the Arimello coffee table and the Cantù dining chair...

"Vronka" Rosewood Midcentury Armchair by Brazilian Designer Sergio Rodrigues
By Sergio Rodrigues
Located in New York, NY
Designed in 1962 by Sergio Rodrigues, the “Vronka” armchair was made of solid Rosewood structure and a floating, comfortable cushion. Like many designers of Rodrigues's generation, he dreams of commercializing well-designed furniture produced in series. In 1962 “Meia-Pataca” factory-cum-store was launch. The idea was to expand distribution and reduce production costs. The industrial thought is visible on the structural solution, applying juxtaposed wooden pieces of a square or rectangular section and straight corners. Other pieces like the “Franco” sofa, the “Tonico” armchair...
