Antique Copper Engraving of a Kangaroo in Australia, 1744
Located in Langweer, NL
The title 'Quadrupede Nomme Kanguroo, Trouve sur la Cote de la N'le Hollande' refers to an uncolored engraving depicting a Kangaroo, originally found and described during Captain Cook's first voyage, later rendered by George Stubbs in the English account. This French version offers a portrayal of the Kangaroo encountered on the coast of New Holland (Australia) during that expedition.
The Kangaroo illustration, an integral part of the narrative from Cook's exploration, became renowned due to its significance in the documentation of newly discovered fauna. George Stubbs, a celebrated artist, interpreted and immortalized this image in the English account of Cook's voyage.
This uncolored engraving presents a historical representation of the Kangaroo, an iconic symbol of Australia's unique wildlife, as observed and documented during a pivotal period of exploration. The illustration stands as a testament to the scientific curiosity and documentation prevalent during early voyages of discovery, contributing to the understanding and documentation of the natural world in the 18th century.
The print is in good condition, considering its age, but does have a few slightly visible vertical creases and some soiling. Nevertheless a very representable print of a few hunderd years old (1744).
Description:
This engraving is based on the first illustration of a “Kangaroo” an Australian species, drawn by George Stubbs from a specimen collected at Endeavour River in 1770 by James Cook’s crew while the Endeavour was being careened and issued in the official accounts of the voyage of the Endeavour. This iconic image captured the public’s imagination for over sixty years and was the first depiction of any Australian animal in western art. Confusion exists as to the original species described, based on the specimens brought back by Cook and the subsequent painting by Stubbs. This situation arose in the comparisons of drawings and photographs which are the only records of the lost original specimens, with Parkinson’s sketch made on 23rd June 1770 at Endeavour River and the later Stubbs painting...

Lieutenant Samuel Pratt's Walnut Highboy, circa 1740 Boston, MA
Located in Milford, NH
An exceptional two part highboy in burled walnut veneer, the upper case featuring a molded cornice with hidden drawer surmounting a center shell carved deep drawer flanked by two fitted small drawers on either side, and four graduated long drawers, all with crossbanded herringbone veneered borders and period, possibly original brasses, over a lower case with a single long drawer over three deep drawers, the center of which repeating the shell carving seen above, unusual for a highboy from this period. The carved skirt features two nicely turned drops, all supported by four slender cabriole legs terminating with pad feet. Massachusetts in origin, probably Boston, dating to the 1730’s, in very good overall condition, with minor veneer shrinkage cracks, minor restorations, minor losses, and light wear commensurate with age and use.
Provenance: Purchased from Shreve, Crump & Low in NY, with a copy of a 1947 letter acknowledging the Boston area origin and commission of this piece by the Pratt Family and reads as follows:
“The known history of ownership of the walnut highboy dates from the 18th century and Lt. Samuel Pratt and his wife, Elizabeth Pratt, who lived in Chelsea in the section known at that time as Prattville. The Pratt family, for whom the area was named, had been in this country since the 17th century. Mr. Mather, while President of Harvard College, stayed at the Pratt home in Chelsea in 1688 while on the way to see King James II of England for the purpose of bringing back into power the theocratic democracy of the Church of England.
During the Revolution, part of Washington’s forces stayed in Prattville, and Washington stayed at the Pratt home. It is known that he ate some of his meals there. Once the British broke into the Pratt house and looted some things, including a scarce bowl which was hidden in the wall of the fireplace.
The son of Lt. Samuel Pratt was also a lieutenant in the American forces and named Samuel. During the Revolution, he was in charge of the stock of arms and ammunition, which each town kept on hand for any emergency; and he carried hay to Boston, where is was used to reduce the noise of the Boston Tea Party...

Rococo Styled Mirror in Walnut with Carving from the 1740s
Located in Lejre, DK
A Rococo-style mirror from the 1740s in Denmark is a remarkable piece of antique furniture that reflects the intricacies of the Rococo design movement during that era.
Rococo is a highly ornamental and decorative style characterized by intricate details, asymmetrical forms, and natural motifs. It was prominent in the mid-18th century and often featured flowing lines, delicate carvings, and an overall sense of elegance.
The fact that the mirror is in its original condition adds to its historical value. It's a testament to the craftsmanship of the time and provides a glimpse into the aesthetics of the 1740s.
The use of walnut in the mirror's construction adds to its allure. Walnut wood was often utilized in antique furniture due to its rich color and durability. The warm tones of the walnut would have likely complemented the intricate carvings and decorative elements of the Rococo style.
A mirror like this would have been a cherished possession in its time, gracing the homes of the affluent and aristocratic. It would have been both a functional piece for checking one's appearance and a decorative item that enhanced the overall ambiance of a room.
In contemporary settings, an antique Rococo mirror...

Baron Rais d'Eisenberg, Hand-Colored Equestrian Engraving c. 1747, "Le Brillant"
By Eisenberg
Located in Morristown, NJ
18th century German, a hand-colored engraving of a dressage horse and rider from Description du Manège Moderne by Friedrich Wilhelm, Baron Rais d' Eisenberg (German, ca. 1700-ca. 1770). Engraved by Bernard Picart (French, 1673-1733). Titled "Le Brillant", this dressage engraving is plate XXXIII. There is a gallery label verso. The print is matted and framed under UF-3 plexiglass, which offers the maximum amount of UV protection (approx. 97%).
This print was originally part of an illustrated book Baron d'Eisenberg made describing the art of the cavaliers and depicting the different breeds of horses- The full title of the book is L'Art de Monter a Cheval: ou Description du Manége Moderne, Dans sa Perfection, published in Leipzig: Arkstée et Merkus, 1747). A set of 7 framed engravings from the same book sold at Sotheby's for $9,500 (plus tax and buyers premium).
Reference:
The author, a German horseman and artist, spent some of his youth at the manège of Saxe-Weimar before entering into the service of the Emperor. He then spent six years in Naples as the Master of Horse of the Viceroy before returning to Vienna where he studied under M. de Regenthal, the imperial Master of Horse. He participated in the coronation of the Emperor Charles V at Frankfurt in 1711, then spent some time in England, but was back in Germany before 1753. He probably died in Tuscany where he was Director and Master of the Horse at the Academy in Pisa. Brunet II, 957; Mennessier de la Lance I, p. 438.
The Baron wrote several important and lavishly illustrated books on horses: his Description du manège moderne dans sa perfection, London 1727, and Dictionnaire des termes du manège moderne, 1747, being the best well-known.
He dedicated Description du Manège Moderne to King George II and to his son, His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. Subscribers to the book included royalty and nobility from all over Europe.
The engraver was Bernard Picart, born in Paris in 1673. He gained honors at the Academy of Paris at the age of sixteen. He was a master designer and engraver and worked in Paris and Amsterdam until his death in 1733.
