19th Century Caucasian Shirvan Area Rug in Geometric Pattern in Blue, Terracotta

About the Item

A beautiful Caucasian Shirvan rug from the southern Azerbaijan region of the Caucasus, featuring a striking geometric medallion design. The rug showcases a classic triple-medallion layout in red and ivory, set against a richly abrash navy blue to blue-green field. The field reveals three distinct tonal shifts, a testament to the use of hand-dyed vegetable colors and the passage of time—lending depth and authenticity to the piece. The ivory border frames the composition with crisp geometric motifs in blue, red, and yellow, echoing the colors of the medallions and adding a vibrant contrast to the darker field. Though worn, the rug remains in good condition, preserving its charm, character, and collectible value. An excellent example of Shirvan village weaving, this piece reflects the artistry and tradition of late 19th-century Caucasian craftsmanship.
