About the Item

A captivating Shirvan area rug from the southern Azerbaijan region of the Caucasus, woven in the late 19th century. This piece features a traditional prayer rug layout with a rich abrash dark brown field, showcasing subtle tonal variations that beautifully reflect the use of natural vegetable dyes. The field is decorated with repeating "hourglass" and star motifs, meticulously arranged in rows to create a sense of rhythm and order. Framing the central field are multiple borders in warm tones of yellow and rust red, filled with finely rendered geometric patterns in blue, red, and yellow. The balanced composition, harmonious palette, and expressive abrash exemplify the refined artistry and technical skill of Caucasian village weavers from the period. A superb collector’s piece that offers both aesthetic beauty and historical significance.
