19th Century Rare Karabagh Gallery Carpet
About the Item
Relying on ancient tribal motifs, geometric designs, and playful abstractions, Caucasian rugs are woven in tribal settings by either village or nomadic folk.
Caucasian rugs are woven in Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Southwest Russia by a multitude of cultures and tribes that employ distinct characteristics unique to their communities.
Woven in the predominantly Armenian populated region of Karabagh, rugs from this region are highly prized by both collectors for their historical value and efficient workmanship as well as by decorators for their bold colors and design patterns.
Due to the absence of spacious indoor areas to fit large horizontal looms, weavers in Karabagh we restricted to weaving either small rugs, runner rugs, or gallery carpets with a maximum width of 2 meters. Yet this phenomenon did not restrain them from weaving long rugs, with some rugs reaching as long as 7 meters.
Soft and muted colors contrast wonderfully when placed on the deep navy-blue field of this Karabagh Gallery Carpet.
Angular star-shaped medallions of alternating sizes are lined up along the length of the carpet through the middle. Their many colors include pastel red, creamy yellow, pastel green, and sky-blue. Cornering each of the smaller medallions are unique crab-shaped polygons with hooked arms in colors of faded beige and sky-blue.
Along both the width and length of the carpet are half-medallions stretching out into the borders giving an “infinity” illusion to the carpet. The main border is of an interesting reddish brown flanked by an ivory “running dog” motif outer border and a floral vine inner border.
