Swedish Rya Rug in Geometric Pattern of Red Orange and Black
By Dania Taepper
Located in Ferndale, MI
Deep dense 100% wool shag pile square rya rug produced in Denmark circa 1965 by Dania Taepper in a geometric collage of contrasting reds and black. Measures: 90" x 90". Rya or rye is a traditional Scandinavian wool rug with a long pile of about 1 to 3 inches. Made using a form of the Ghiordes knot to make the double-sided pile fabric. Though rya means "rug" in English, the original meaning in Sweden of rya was a bed cover with a knotted pile. The first ryas originated in the early fifteenth century as coarse, long-piled, heavy covers used by mariners instead of furs. As time went on the rugs became more bright and colorful. Now very much a part of mid century interior design.

Antique Red Rose Pink Geometic Caucasian Silk Soumak Rug with Birds, circa 1960s
Located in New York, NY

It is a type of flat-weave, somewhat resembling but stronger and thicker than Kilim, with a smooth front face and a ragged back, where Kilim is smooth both sides. Soumak lacks the slits characteristic of Kilim, as it is usually woven with supplementary weft threads as continuous supports. The technique involves wrapping colored weft threads over and under the warp threads, adding strength and embroidery-like pattern. This gorgeous Antique Caucasian Silk Soumak...
