About the Item
This rare Asmalik Yomut—a distinctive triangular piece used in Turkmen wedding processions—was woven by the Yomut (or Yomud) tribes of Central Asia. Asmaliks were typically created in pairs and draped over the flanks of the camel carrying the bride, serving both ceremonial and symbolic roles within Turkmen nomadic tradition. The central field features an expertly rendered array of diamond-shaped ‘gül’ motifs, arranged in staggered rows with strong geometric clarity. These medallions—characteristic of Yomut design—are drawn in bold tones of deep madder red, ivory, indigo, and walnut brown, and are framed by a powerful zigzag-shaped apex, underscoring the camel’s hump. The main border, composed of stylized reciprocal hooked motifs, is surrounded by narrow minor borders that echo the tribe’s classic symbolism—thought to offer protection and prosperity. The bottom kilim band includes decorative flatweave work, often personalized and unique to each tribe or family group.
