Rare Antique Peking Carpet
About the Item
After being influenced by the nomadic tribes of East Turkestan (Western China), rug weaving developed a rich industry commercially in China from as early as the 16th century. Chinese carpets are noted for the very distinct deep indigo blue employed in their pieces, the natural dyes of which originating from a collection of plants known as ‘Lan Cao’.
Around the turn of the century, Peking (Beijing) became the center for rug-weaving in China. Producing rugs of all sizes, Peking rugs are characterized by their unique texture and feel and dense wool which create a thicker pile that would sit seamlessly on the floor.
While Peking carpets most often feature a central medallion acting as the focal point, this carpet deviates from the norm via an all-over floral pattern. Cream-colored palmettes are inter-connected via floral vine patterns all throughout a deep Chinese indigo blue field. The border area is a botanical vine scroll pattern accentuating the magnificent field. A ‘two-color’ carpet that can easily blend in with interiors and provide a prominent blue accent.
