About the Item

In some areas of the world, barriers and borders divide populations, pointing out differences, be they national, cultural or social. Along the same boundary line two distinct identities coexist, but without the possibility of exchange and interaction. If we followed the boundary line to its end, what could we find? What would happen if that line, instead of separating, became an element of continuity between two identities that belong to each other? The nomadic tribes that crossed the heart of Asia, came often across the white fossils of large prehistoric animals that emerged from the red earth, exposed to the elements. The various reports of travellers have over time interpreted the form of these remains in an imaginative way, describing a beast with the body of a lion and the head of an eagle: Grypho, a legendary creature responsible for guarding mines and treasures. The dual nature of the carpet manifests itself in the lion's mantle, knotted with golden hues, in opposition to the eagle's plumage, characterized by tufts of dark wool. Following the lines carved into the carpet, the two parts gradually merge into one another, surrounding and protecting the central brass element. Where terrestrial animals and creatures of the heavens meet, the carpet becomes a bridge between two worlds.

Terra Incognita, Phoenix Carpet, Hand Knotted in Wool, 200kpi, Faberhama
By Faberhama
Located in Milan, Lombardy
In Asian lands, traditional buildings are characterized by the Jali, large half-closed architectural openings with perforated elements that allow light to filter into the interior. The windows conceal those who live inside and at the same time allow them to observe the outside world change as the light changes. Measures: 180 x 300 cm. Phoenix is a mythological bird that rises from its ashes in the fire, a symbol of spiritual rebirth and human regeneration. In different cultures his return is considered an auspicious event, associated with the rising of the sun and the beginning of a new period of prosperity and fertility. Its fiery plumage expands itself with warm colours like a sunlit landscape. Forming a feathered tail, red bows glide softly to the ends of the carpet and are knotted on wooden rods. With phoenix, the carpet becomes like a window on the world...
