Cheerful 19th Century Agra Carpet
About the Item
Situated at the heart of woven carpet production in India from the Mughal period up until the end of British rule, Agra carpets are synonymous with woven productions of the Indian sub-continent. Indian carpets demonstrate very high knot density, fine weaves, and crisp designs testament to the exemplary workmanship of Indian weavers. The sub-continent is also blessed with a diverse set of natural dye sources that contribute to the many color palettes found in Indian carpets.
For this carpet, a pleasant ivory field is decorated with an assortment of flowers, shrubs, leaves and vines in accents of powder blue, teal, pastel red, cream, and ebony. The field is framed by a prominent border consisting of several layers of ebony, teal, ivory, and a single madder border layer.
A calm carpet with a prominent but unassuming background color contrasted by powerful ebony and madder accents.
