Vintage Moroccan Modernist Wool Berber Rug
About the Item
Many French carpet designers of the mid-20th century were commissioning their weavings in Morocco, which at the time was a French colony, in that they could obtain beautiful pile carpets at a much lower price than in France.
Many decades of this type of commissions have inevitably left a mark on local weavings, especially those woven near urban centers. This rug from the Zenaga tribe, located near Tazenacht, an affluent town located in the Moroccan High Atlas, is a clear example of how certain styles can percolate in the indigenous iconography.
