It is enclosed with a turtle vine scroll border, flanked with a series of carnation meander guard bands, meander borders. A protection inner crenelated fence guard band and outer sawtooth guard band add interest and depth to this antique Persian palace rug. During the late 19th century, 1883, the Manchester, England, based Anglo-Swiss firm of Ziegler and Co. established a factory whose sole objective was to produce Sultanabad Rugs to meet western demands. Western designers modified classical Persian designs, marking the first time westerners directly affected Persian designs (beyond influence through market demand).
