Antique Bakshaish small carpet

About the Item

Bakshaish carpets are considered by most dealers and connoisseurs to be in a special category of their own, rare and uniquely beautiful. In recent years they have risen steeply in value. The Bakshaish were a small tribe/village group in NW Persia, whose style contributed to the adjoining area near Hamadan and its weaving of the famous Serapi carpets. The latter have become in recent decades among the most popular antique 19th-century large-format rugs in America and elsewhere. Medium and large size Bakshaish, much rarer than Serapis, continue to break price records. See Encyclopedia of Antique Carpets (Moheban) Vol 1 page 86 for a superior example. In their rather mysterious pattern language, they remain unique. This is a small example which is even rarer for its size as the majority of Bakshaish pieces are found in approximately 10x8 feet sizes or larger. This then is a “Baby Bakshaish” a delightful collectible. In excellent condition.
