Antique Hand-Knotted Wool Herati-Pattern Persian Seneh Rug

About the Item

This antique, circa 1900, Persian Seneh rug has a shaded indigo-blue field with an overall polychrome herati-pattern, in a brick-red border of polychrome turtle-palmettes linked by angular palmette and leafy vines between golden-yellow and light blue meandering floral vine stripes, plain outer shaded blue stripe. Persian Seneh rugs, woven in the Kurdish town of Sanandaj (historically known as Seneh) in western Iran, are celebrated for their delicate designs and exceptional craftsmanship. These rugs often feature intricate floral or herati (fish) patterns, rendered with remarkable precision using fine wool and tight knots. Known for their subtle elegance and refined color palettes—often including shades of red, blue, and ivory—Seneh rugs are prized for their lightweight, durable structure and artistic complexity, making them a favorite among rug connoisseurs and collectors.
