Antique Khorassan Gallery Carpet

About the Item

The region of Khorassan in northeast Persia is acknowledged as being one of the oldest weaving centers in that country, with accounts dating carpet production as early as the tenth century. This region at one time included the city of Herat, which was an important creative and manufacturing center during the Safavid period (1501 – 1722 AD). It is generally accepted that the Herati pattern originated here, and that many of the fabulous court carpets produced during this period were woven in this province. This carpet has an oval pendant medallion on a charcoal field covered with Herati motifs (a central rosette centered in a diamond flanked by four curling leaves) within rosette and reciprocal trefoil borders. 19’ 7” x 8’ 0”.
