Antique Persian Khorassan Carpet
About the Item
The region of Khorassan in northeast Persia is acknowledged as being one of the oldest weaving centers in that country, with accounts dating carpet production as early as the tenth century. This region at one time included the city of Herat, which was an important creative and manufacturing center during the Safavid period (1501 – 1722 AD). It is generally accepted that the Herati pattern originated here, and that many of the fabulous court carpets produced during this period were woven in this province. This carpet has a Mina Khani pattern, which loosely translates in Persian to "the garden of a house". This design has four similar flowers attached by vinery flanking a central rosette, forming an overall lattice pattern. 12' 1" x 8' 9".
