About the Item

78238 Antique Persian Sarouk Rug, 03'05 x 04'09. Steeped in heritage and radiating refined elegance, this hand-knotted wool antique Persian Sarouk rug is a testament to the grandeur of early 20th-century Persian weaving. Revered for its luxurious pile, impeccable craftsmanship, and richly detailed artistry, the Sarouk tradition has long been associated with prestige and connoisseurship. Here, a sumptuous ruby-red field becomes a canvas for a masterful allover pattern of scrolling botanicals, flowering vines, and palmettes, each element arranged with measured symmetry to create an exceptional masterpiece of balance and sophistication. This rug is more than an object of beauty—it is a statement of cultivated taste and exclusivity. The interplay of deep crimson tones with accents of midnight indigo, golden ochre, and soft ivory lends the composition both warmth and visual depth. The design’s elegance lies in its restraint: every blossom, leaf, and tendril flows seamlessly into the next, creating an uninterrupted rhythm reminiscent of a Persian garden in perpetual bloom. The luminous color palette, softened over time, reveals the patina of age—a hallmark of authenticity that collectors prize. It is this unique harmony of palette and design that allows a Sarouk to transcend mere ornament and become an heirloom of cultural significance. Framed by a bold navy border teeming with stylized rosettes and vine scrolls, the rug’s field is both grounded and elevated, guiding the eye inward toward its symphonic core. The border’s strength contrasts with the delicacy of the inner design, balancing opulence with order, and lending the piece its architectural dignity. Every knot, every flourish, reflects the hands of artisans whose mastery of technique and sensitivity to design secured the Sarouk’s place as one of Persia’s most celebrated weaving traditions. For the discerning elite, to own such an exquisite work of art is to partake in a legacy of distinction. More than a floor covering, it is a cultural artifact that embodies the ideals of permanence, artistry, and refinement. Its presence transforms a space, infusing it with an air of prestige and historical gravitas. This antique Persian Sarouk is not simply rare—it is transcendent: a woven expression of luxury that whispers of empire, artistry, and timeless sophistication. Rendered in variegated shades of red, blue, brown, pink, garnet, sapphire, tan, black and taupe with other accent colors. Abrash. Hand knotted wool. Made in Iran. Measures: 03'05 x 04'09. Antique Persian Sarouk Area Rug
Located in New York, NY
Sarouk is a name of a village situated about 25 miles north of Arak (Sultanabad). This region became one of the most active regions of carpet weaving in the late 19th century through the early 20th century. The city's most famous designer was named Farahan. To be able to compete with Kashan in rug commerce, Farahan designed rugs with center medallion motives. Today, these carpets are referred to as Antique 19th century Farahan Sarouks. In the 1920s and 1930s a well-known rug dealer in New York thought that Americans would buy rose-field carpets with blue borders and detached floral motives. During that period, a vast number of Sarouks with rose-fields and all over floral patterns were woven and exported to the American market. However, the natural dyed rose color did not stand up to the alkaline bath to which new rugs in Arak were subjected in the finishing process. The rose color faded radically. But instead of changing the finishing process or changing the composition of the dyes to stand up to alkali, New York merchants "solved" the problem by arming their staffs with synthetic dyes and little paint brushes with which they painted back in the rose-color in the entire fields of thousands and thousands of rugs and carpets over a period of 20 years. Today, Antique Sarouk rugs and carpets...
