About the Item

78122 Antique Persian Sarouk Rug, 02'01 x 04'02. Radiating timeless grandeur, this hand-knotted antique Persian Sarouk rug stands as a paragon of refined elegance, a woven testament to Persia’s golden age of artistry. Its iconic vase design unfolds like a garden in perpetual bloom: from delicate central florals to the abundance of blossoms sprouting from vases at either end, the field becomes a living tableau of fertility, joy, and continuity. The meticulous detail and tactile richness are not merely decorative—they elevate this exceptional piece into the realm of prestige, an heirloom that speaks of both cultural heritage and cultivated taste. The signature palette, saturated yet graceful, adds layers of opulence to the composition. Crimson reds, softened blues, and muted ivories harmonize to create a visual symphony, where each hue is chosen with intention. These tones carry symbolic depth: red for vitality and protection, blue for wisdom and spiritual peace, ivory for purity and refinement. Together, they transform this exquisite work of art into more than a floor covering—it becomes a language of color, a timeless manuscript woven into wool. The enclosing floral border completes the design with a quiet balance, underscoring the strength of Persian symmetry and discipline. For the elite collector or discerning designer, exclusivity lies not only in rarity but in resonance. This Sarouk rug, with its joyful yet dignified aura, introduces a distinctly feminine energy—a celebration of form, grace, and enduring beauty. In a Parisian salon, Manhattan penthouse, or stately country estate, this extraordinary masterpiece commands admiration without ostentation, conferring a subtle yet unmistakable sense of status. Its presence is both grounding and uplifting, the mark of interiors curated with discernment and worldliness. Yet its allure extends beyond luxury. To acquire such a rug is to engage in cultural preservation, ensuring that the artistry of Persian weaving continues to be celebrated in an era of homogenized production. Each thread represents generations of artisans whose mastery was their livelihood and legacy. Owning this Sarouk is thus not only an indulgence in exclusivity but also an act of social good—supporting the safeguarding of history while embodying the highest ideals of beauty, rarity, and refinement. This is more than a rug; it is a woven narrative of heritage, prestige, and timeless human creativity. Abrash. Desirable Age Wear. Hand knotted wool. Made in Iran. Measures: 02'01 x 04'02. Sarouk is a name of a village situated about 25 miles north of Arak (Sultanabad). This region became one of the most active regions of carpet weaving in the late 19th century through the early 20th century. The city's most famous designer was named Farahan. To be able to compete with Kashan in rug commerce, Farahan designed rugs with center medallion motives. Today, these carpets are referred to as Antique 19th century Farahan Sarouks. In the 1920s and 1930s a well-known rug dealer in New York thought that Americans would buy rose-field carpets with blue borders and detached floral motives. During that period, a vast number of Sarouks with rose-fields and all over floral patterns were woven and exported to the American market. However, the natural dyed rose color did not stand up to the alkaline bath to which new rugs in Arak were subjected in the finishing process. The rose color faded radically. But instead of changing the finishing process or changing the composition of the dyes to stand up to alkali, New York merchants "solved" the problem by arming their staffs with synthetic dyes and little paint brushes with which they painted back in the rose-color in the entire fields of thousands and thousands of rugs and carpets over a period of 20 years. Today, Antique Sarouk rugs and carpets...
