About the Item

Antique Turkmen Ensi Rug, Early 20th Century An ensi is a type of Turkmen rug woven specifically as a door flap for a yurt. The cruciform field design is thought to derive from wooden Central Asian doors. Because of the inclusion of a directional niche, woven at the top of these pieces, ensis are sometimes wrongly attributed as prayer rugs. This ensi, while still antique, represents a later phase of traditional Turkmen weaving. It is smaller than many, but retains much of the iconic features of drawing. Interestingly, while most Tekke Turkmen pieces were woven within the borders of what is now the nation of Turkmenistan, this piece was most likely woven in a Turkmen ethnic enclave in neighboring Northeast Persia. Antique Turkmen Yomut Main Carpet Rug, 19th Century
Located in San Francisco, CA
Antique Turkmen Yomut Main Carpet Rug, 19th Century This classic Turkmen main carpet uses the so-called ‘kepse gul’ field design against a saturated plum madder ground. Elongated ‘kepse guls’ are drawn diagonally across the field alternating with white and red variants. Though slightly smaller than most of the type, the long and narrow proportions of this piece are in keeping with Yomut carpets and their particular proportions. The ‘syrga’ and ‘running dog’ border are likewise quintessentially Yomut, and in combination with the field design give this carpet the impression of a large luxurious Turkmen bag...
