Khamseh Rug, 19th Century (2nd Q)
Although woven by nomadic pastoralists, a surprising number of South Persian tribal rugs display patterns adapted from urban Persian textiles and weaving. This Khamseh rug draws rows of paired paisleys or, as they are known in the literature, ‘mother and daughter botehs’ against an ivory ground. This design originated in Persian and Indian shawls. The scale is large and the color is vibrant.
