Lavar Kerman Carpet, circa 1900

About the Item

Classical Persian carpet design often followed the art of book binding and illuminated manuscript. Many of the best manuscript painters in the 16th and 17th centuries translated their works on paper into immaculate carpet designs for the most sophisticated urban carpet studios. This stunning example of weaving from the Lavar workshops of Southeast Persia at the turn-of-the-century is just such an example. The repeating field pattern of cartouches recalls many of the earlier carpets of the Timrud and Safavid dynasties. Interspersed with cloud bands and arabesques, the overall design of this carpet is a positive delight to the eyes. This carpet is woven in an extremely Fine knot density, with an asymmetrical knot and fully depressed cotton warps and cotton and silk wefts. The fineness of the weave allows for gentle details and small-scale fully articulate design language.

1900's Antique Persian Lavar Kerman Carpet with Modern Style
Located in Dallas, TX
78354 Antique Persian Kerman Rug, 11'02 x 16'07. Woven in the poetic silence of early 20th century Persia, this hand knotted wool antique Lavar Kerman rug is a masterful ode to elegance and craftsmanship. Its velvety navy field, like a starlit garden under a midnight sky, blooms with a cascade of florals, scrolling vines, and radiant rosettes—each petal and palmette tenderly hand-knotted to form a visual symphony of order and beauty. In this formal garden of wool, celestial medallions float like full moons across the field, each ringed with palmette crowns and latticed in delicate filigree, reflecting both cosmic rhythm and earthly grace. The heart of the rug pulses with the lyricism of Persian romanticism—delicate tendrils curve like verses in calligraphy, winding gracefully among sprigs of Shah Abbasi blossoms, peonies, and scrolling islimi. Every flourish seems guided by a painter’s hand, and indeed, Lavar Kerman weavers were known not merely as artisans, but as artists of the loom. Their deft use of color—soft rose, emerald green, sapphire, and golden saffron—creates a harmonic interplay that enchants the eye and soothes the soul, much like a verse from Hafez spoken at dusk. Surrounding this rhapsodic field is a wide border, its backdrop the tender blush of aged parchment, upon which an arcaded vine-and-palmette design unfolds like illuminated manuscript margins. Vines dance upward in rhythmic scrolls, each curve entwined with floral clusters that evoke Persian gardens, both cultivated and imagined. Guard borders of meandering blossoms and protective motifs enclose the entire composition, as if to preserve the timeless beauty it holds within. This antique Persian rug is not merely a floor covering—it is a historical tapestry, echoing the splendor of Qajar-era refinement and the refined flourish of Lavar Kerman’s most illustrious workshops. Its stately presence, exceptional design, and painterly palette mark it as a work of grace and nobility. To own such a piece is to cradle a chapter of Persian artistry, lovingly passed down through generations, its woven poetry still whispering softly through the fibers of time. Rendered in variegated shades of navy blue, burgundy, raspberry pink, tan, pink, sky blue, and beige with other accent colors. Abrash. Desirable Age Wear. Discoloration. Some Spots. Hand-knotted wool. Made in Iran. Hotel Lobby Size Carpet 11 x...
