About the Item

This exquisite antique Tehran rug, woven circa 1890, is a magnificent example of Persian craftsmanship, embodying the refinement and artistry for which Tehran weavings are renowned. Measuring an impressive 9.5 by 13.5 feet, this rug showcases an intricate and highly detailed design that reflects the elegance of classical Persian aesthetics. At its heart lies a breathtaking central medallion, meticulously woven with an elaborate array of floral motifs, arabesques, and scrolling vine work. The balance and symmetry of the design are extraordinary, with every element thoughtfully placed to create a sense of movement and harmony. The medallion is framed by ornate spandrels that extend outward into the richly decorated field, which is adorned with a mesmerizing pattern of blossoms, tendrils, and delicate foliage, giving the rug an almost three-dimensional depth. The field color is a striking khaki green, a rare and sophisticated shade that provides a unique backdrop for the intricate detailing. This earthy tone is beautifully complemented by deep crimson reds, rich sapphire blues, soft ivories, and delicate accents of gold and coral, which add vibrancy and contrast to the composition. The wide, meticulously detailed border frames the central design with a deep indigo ground, filled with intricate floral and vine motifs that echo the patterns found within the field. Layers of finely woven guard borders further enhance the framing, giving the rug an exquisite sense of definition and balance. Every aspect of this piece reflects the masterful precision of the Persian weavers who created it, showcasing an extraordinary level of craftsmanship. The high knot density of this rug is a testament to the remarkable skill and patience of its weavers. Tehran rugs are known for their exceptional fineness, often rivaling or surpassing even the most prestigious Persian weavings. The density of knots allows for an incredibly crisp and detailed rendering of the intricate floral and geometric elements, creating a level of clarity that is truly remarkable. The rug’s soft, lustrous wool adds to its luxurious appeal, with a pile that has been carefully maintained over the years to preserve its original beauty. The artistic sophistication of this piece places it among the finest examples of Persian weaving, making it a highly collectible and desirable work of art. As an investment-worthy antique, this Tehran rug is not only a stunning decorative element but also a historically significant textile. Rugs of this caliber are increasingly rare, particularly in such well-preserved condition, and their value continues to appreciate over time. Whether placed in a grand living room, a formal dining space, or curated as part of a fine rug collection, this masterpiece will bring an air of refinement, history, and timeless beauty to any setting. The interplay of intricate design, rich coloration, and impeccable craftsmanship makes this rug a true heirloom piece, one that will be cherished for generations to come.

Carpets made in Tehran have curvilinear patterns. The majority are around fifty years old. It is very hard to find rugs and carpets made in Tehran in recent years, except ones produced by master weavers for museums or rich buyers. One of the most famous master weavers and rug designers in IRAN was Rassam Arabzadeh. The quality of TEHRAN carpets varies. Older ones (pre-1945) are good. Newer ones produced by master weavers are excellent. This new series of rugs ends up in museums or is exported for a high price. Warps is mostly cotton; wefts is either cotton or wool. Weavers in TEHRAN use Persian knots. The quality of the carpet depends on the number of knots, which varies, but averages from around 120 KPSI...
