About the Item

78163 Vintage Persian Sarouk Rug, 09'04 x 12'03. Step into a harmonious blend of Neoclassic sophistication and Old World allure with this exquisite hand-knotted wool vintage Persian Sarouk rug. Rooted in the weaving traditions of the renowned Sarouk region, celebrated since the 19th century, this Persian rug seamlessly marries the timeless charm of the past with a neoclassical touch. In the spirit of the early Sarouk designs, this vintage piece showcases a classic curvilinear design and an elegant color palette, embodying refined elegance that transcends eras. The weaving technique echoes the artistry of the region's workshops, where antique carpets featuring opulent arabesques, vine scrolls, and local bouquet-filled designs were meticulously crafted. Dive into an alluring allover pattern that unfolds a canvas of blooming palmettes, stylized florals, rosettes, curved sickle leaves, peony, lotus blossoms, and acanthus on the ivory field. Opulent arabesques dance gracefully within the intricate vine scrolls, creating a visual symphony that harks back to the diversity of regional carpet-weaving traditions mentioned in the historical context. Discover hidden delights in each corner, where a bird is nestled among lush botanicals, reminiscent of the Sarouk rugs' penchant for incorporating nature-inspired elements. The ornate border, adorned with a wealth of floral ornamentation, and carnation meander guard borders, pays homage to the meticulous craftsmanship of Sarouk rugs produced in the turn of the 20th century. With its lively and light-hearted feel, this vintage Persian Sarouk rug becomes more than a mere floor covering; it transforms into a statement of style and panache, bringing a touch of history and timeless sophistication to any space. Let this rug be a testament to the enduring aesthetic appeal of Sarouk designs, where each thread weaves a story that spans generations. Rendered in variegated shades of ivory, red, beige, pink, sky blue, light green, cerise, navy blue, black, tan, blue, raspberry red, rose, mint, orange and baby blue with other accent colors. Abrash. Antique Persian Sarouk Area Rug
Located in New York, NY
Sarouk is a name of a village situated about 25 miles north of Arak (Sultanabad). This region became one of the most active regions of carpet weaving in the late 19th century through the early 20th century. The city's most famous designer was named Farahan. To be able to compete with Kashan in rug commerce, Farahan designed rugs with center medallion motives. Today, these carpets are referred to as Antique 19th century Farahan Sarouks. In the 1920s and 1930s a well-known rug dealer in New York thought that Americans would buy rose-field carpets with blue borders and detached floral motives. During that period, a vast number of Sarouks with rose-fields and all over floral patterns were woven and exported to the American market. However, the natural dyed rose color did not stand up to the alkaline bath to which new rugs in Arak were subjected in the finishing process. The rose color faded radically. But instead of changing the finishing process or changing the composition of the dyes to stand up to alkali, New York merchants "solved" the problem by arming their staffs with synthetic dyes and little paint brushes with which they painted back in the rose-color in the entire fields of thousands and thousands of rugs and carpets over a period of 20 years. Today, Antique Sarouk rugs and carpets...
