1970s Etruscan revival Scandinavian Rya Rug in Pink Tones

About the Item

Late 60s early 70s rya shag rug in pink and red tones of a scene reminiscent of the Etruscan period. A figure on a horse and chariot with a bow and arrow aimed at a target off in the distance. This rug’s shape works well as a runner down a short hallway, or in front of a dresser or desk or even fireplace. Although, you might wish to preserve its artistic value and hang it from the wall. Originally, “Rya” rugs were used as bedding to keep warm during the cold months. They became a folk art type of commodity and were enjoyed by the noble class almost exclusively. Eventually, the phase passed where it was a hot commodity amongst the nobility and the average person was able to afford and enjoy the rugs once again. The rya rug craze has ebbed and flowed throughout history. It reached a peak in the US during the 60s and 70s. It began making a comeback in the 2020s, but likely nothing compared to the popularity of them in the 1970s. This rug in particular was purchased in Europe, likely Germany, and brought to the US. I raked the rug prior to taking the photos so the pile is groomed. It has not been cleaned in a number of years but it is free from stains, discoloration and I did not notice any damage to the rug anywhere. Based on my understanding the rug was in a guest bedroom that did not see much activity for the last 30 years or so.
