About the Item

Sananjalkametsä / Forest of Ferns Designed in 1955 by Kirsti Ilvessalo (1920-2019). Ilvessalo was one of the most prominent textile designers concentrating especially on the ryijy or rya rugs. She designed over 300 different ryas during her career and won the Grand Prix in the Milan Triennial 1954 with her rya Palokärki (Black Woodpecker). She also worked for over 20 years as a textile consultant for the architectural office of Alvar Aalto. To her, the rya was essentially not a tapestry but a textile that would be placed on the floor as a rug – a good example of how multi-functionality is a part of the rya tradition. Item features a Minimalist and abstract multi-color pattern in a color mix of grey, green, black and brown tones etc.
