Bohemian Rugs and Carpets

BOHEMIAN STYLE

Defying design conventions and embracing all tastes, Bohemian style, or Boho style, is eclectic, bold and, above all, individual. Vintage Bohemian-style furniture and decor feature bright colors, natural materials and a global spirit, ranging from statement pieces such as peacock chairs constructed with wicker and handmade art-glass vases to jewel-toned plush seating like turquoise sofas.

Although Bohemian furniture is not rooted in a specific time and can include Victorian lamps alongside Space Age chairs, its name dates back to the 19th century. Its exact origins are unclear, with some sources linking it to a counterculture formed in the wake of the French Revolution and others to a pejorative for the Romani people in France who were erroneously believed to be from Bohemia, which was part of what is now the Czech Republic.

By the 1850s, “bohemian” was used to describe someone who led an itinerant life, usually an artist, actor or author. This helped shift the term from disparaging to something romantic and evoking creativity, culture and travel. In the 20th century, to be a bohemian was fashionable, and the celebration of free expression in the 1960s gave the Bohemian style a hippie flair. It has remained popular over the years, especially with younger generations seeking to express their personality and individual perspective through furniture, folk art, antiques and other collectibles.

A Bohemian interior exuberantly mixes textures and patterns, particularly through textiles from around the world in tapestries, rugs and upholstery. Bohemian decor can include Japanese shibori, Indonesian ikat and Kazakhstani suzani prints mingling with Moroccan lanterns, Turkish carpets and wall hangings from India. Saturated earthy colors like burnt orange and marigold yellow are common to bring together the mix of vintage, modern and global design.

Vintage 1970s Boho Rug Berber Algerian Multicolored Geometrical Handmade Pink
Located in London, GB
A vintage Berber 'Amazigh' multicoloured wool rug from northern Algeria is a beautiful and intricately crafted piece of textile art. The rug has a square shape and is double-faced, meaning that it can be used on either side. The base colour of the rug is beige, which provides a warm and neutral backdrop for the striking geometric patterns that adorn it. The rug features stripes of diamond shapes, zigzags, and eye-like motifs, which are arranged in a balanced and symmetrical manner. The colours used in the rug are predominantly bright, bold, rich and vibrant, with a mix of pinks, blues, greens, and yellows standing out against the beige background. The use of multiple colours adds depth and vibrancy to the rug, making it a visually striking piece. The wool used in the rug is of high quality, providing a soft and plush texture that feels luxurious underfoot. The rug is also durable and well-made, able to withstand the test of time and repeated use. Unlike other Berber rugs that originate from neighbouring touristic countries and anyone could grab a rug, Algeria is not a touristic destination and therefore extremely difficult to find these rugs outside the country. We have a large collection of Algerian Berber Amazigh rugs...

Vintage Berber 1970s Geometrical Rug Handmade Wool Boho North African Ethnic XXL
Located in London, GB
A very large Algerian Berber rug with many different colorful patterns, such as arrows, diamonds, triangles, and more, stacked and organized in horizontal lines on a white/beige base, is a stunning work of art that is characterised by its standout colors of pink fuchsia and blue red purple palette. The different shapes on the rug's patterns hold cultural and historical significance, and the use of these standout colors adds an extra layer of meaning to the design. For instance, pink fuchsia is often associated with love and femininity, while blue red purple is often associated with royalty and spirituality. The combination of these colors and the different shapes on the rug's patterns reflect the Berber people's cultural and religious beliefs, as well as their skilled craftsmanship. The use of the white/beige base creates a neutral and versatile backdrop, allowing the vibrant colors and patterns to stand out even more. This rug's large size makes it a perfect centrepiece for a living room, dining room, or bedroom, adding warmth and character to any space.. This rug is handwoven using traditional techniques by Berber tribes in Algeria, and the use of high-quality natural materials such as wool and cotton ensures its durability and longevity. From a cultural and historical perspective, this rug is unique as it is a product of the Berber people's long-standing tradition of weaving, which dates back centuries. The Berbers are indigenous people of North Africa, and their weaving traditions have been passed down through generations, preserving their cultural heritage. Unlike other Berber rugs that originate from neighbouring touristic countries and anyone could grab a rug, Algeria is not a touristic destination and therefore extremely difficult to find these rugs outside the country.
