About the Item
The carpets woven by the Anglo-Swiss firm of Ziegler & Co. during the late nineteenth century in the region of Arak are often characterised by classic Persian patterns rendered in highly refined colours, where the wool yarns are masterfully dyed so to create an almost translucent effect. In this example the allover pattern of repeating stylised leaf motifs, known as 'herati', is executed with that refined stylisation that distinguishes real Ziegler carpets. The perfect harmony between the soft palette and the aristocratic design is the reason why Ziegler carpets are one of the most highly demanded typologies among antique decorative rugs, and have historically been employed in the most prestigious Western interiors.

In addition to workshops in Tabriz and Sultanabad (present-day Arak), Ziegler & Co. has brought the excellence of Persian rugs to a Western market through a base of operations in Manchester, England. Compared to rugs typically produced in Iran, Ziegler rugs and carpets — also referred to as Peshawar rugs or Chobi rugs — are famed for a softer palette and bolder patterns.
