Heriz Rug, Mid-20th Century
Located in San Francisco, CA
Heriz Rug, Mid-20th Century Heriz rugs and carpets were woven in Northwest Persia starting in the mid 19th century in response to a great increase in demand for rugs internationally. Prior to that, there were not rugs woven (in Persia) for export that exhibited this stylized drawing of plant and flower forms. The lower knot density and thicker pile became the standard for these rugs, which lent to a less formal aesthetic that remains popular to this day. The use of natural dyes in the Heriz workshops prevailed well into the 20th century, setting them apart from city workshops, which began to embrace synthetic dyes as early as the turn of the century. What was once one of the least expensive...

Mid-Century Modern Vintage Kurdish Tulu with Dotted Polychrome Background
Located in Milan, IT
Tulu rugs represent one of the earliest forms of nomadic pile weaving, typically knotted with a medium-high pile as they were meant as bedding rugs for the tent. The patterns are quite simple, ranging from completely open fields to stacked niches, with basic geometric patterns such as the one here representing some interesting variants. Here the field is embellished by an infinite repeat dotted pattern, which gains momentum by virtue of the irregular colour variations of the background, creating a syncopated and colourful stripe...

Antique Minimalist Jajim Flat-Woven Rug with Vertical Ivory and Green Stripes
Located in Milan, IT
A very graphic tribal jajim wool flat-weave composed of two joined panels each containing an array of forest green stripes of varying widths on an ivory background. The result is a wool flat-weave with a mirror image pattern having a central stripe that is considerably wider than the others. What makes this example rather unique is the unusual ivory/green colour combination, as green is a colour which is very rarely used in the textile tribal art of the Near East as it is quite complicated to obtain, as it involves a very careful mixture of indigo blue and saffron yellow. The resulting visual effect is highly abstract and reminiscent more of Western contemporary art...

Antique Minimalist Jajim Flat-Woven Rug with Vertical Polychrome Stripes
Located in Milan, IT
A graphic tribal Kilim composed of two joined panels each containing an array of polychrome vertical stripes in a variety of natural colors. The result is a wool flat-weave with a mirror image pattern, the central compartment being a twice as wide open field. What makes this example rather unique is the richness of the individual colors, obtained from natural dyes, as well the generous width of the vertical stripes. Furthermore, the quality of the individual dyes, which include a highly saturated saffron yellow and a clear coral red, are indicative of an early vintage. The piece is in pristine condition. The resulting visual effect is highly abstract and reminiscent more of Western contemporary art...
