About the Item

One of the main trajectories of French Modernism was dedicated towards a revival of a classical iconography. Motivated from a reaction towards the often rigid and austere mood of the vast majority of Modernist design modules, artists like Louis Süe, André Groult and Andrè Arbus would formulate patterns by borrowing elements of Neoclassicism, reconfiguring them in a style which will eventually be defined as Neo Baroque. On this rare flat-woven example, woven at a workshop in Aubusson, the design is defined by four corner elements consisting of large curvilinear architectural motifs of clear Baroque origin, which also appear on furniture and metal work of the period. These motifs appear on rugs which have been attributed principally to André Arbus. The rug shows a woven JF monogram, and is so far unattributed. For further reading please refer to J. Sirat, F. Siriex, ‘Tapis Français du XXe Siècle’, Paris 1993, pp. 62-75.
