Armchair, Pair, Hunting Trophy, Antler, Red Deer, Fallow, Wild Boar, Hide
Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
Pairs of hunting trophy armchairs are exceptionally rare. This pair are also unusual because they are made from a few large antlers giving them a minimalist quality. The fluid form of the antlers creates a sculptural, organic aesthetic. They are also usable and very comfortable. It has taken great skill to make these chairs, selecting massive antlers to create exquisite form and stability within a minimalistic, sculptural aesthetic. They are dramatic and unusual injecting a naturalistic and organic gravitas to any interior which reflects the grace, agility and presence of the kings of forest that they came from. The impressive crestings, sides and front stretchers on each armchair are made from five magnificent fallow deer antlers. The arms and supports on each chair are made from eight massive red deer antlers. The antlers are arranged creatively to create both, a stable structure and sculptural form. The seats are upholstered in wild boar hide. Dimensions: Width 91cm., 35.83in., Height 132cm., 51.97in., Depth 96cm., 37.80in. Museums With Collections Of Antler Furniture • Victoria & Albert Museum, London • Museum casle trautenfels, Trautenfels – Austria • Museum of natural history, Venice • Palace Museum, Beijing “There is grace and movement in the antler itself. They’re one of the most beautiful forms in nature…” Gail Flynn Hunting trophies have been used as source material for clothes hooks, storage racks and lamps since the 15th century. Mounting antlers and stuffed heads on walls provided impressive, decorative displays for hunting trophies. A hunting lodge replete with antlers and stuffed animals was most likely where ideas for antler furnishings emerged. At the beginning of the 19th century antler furniture was made exclusively for the European nobility to decorate palaces, castles and country seats. The furniture was either made completely from stag antler, or it was decorated with antler pieces from the stag, deer, fallow deer and others, or veneered with sliced antler pieces to create a hunting design. The first recorded antler furniture dates from 1825, made for a hunting castle of Count William of Nassau near Wiesbaden, Germany. Other famous collections of historical antler furniture are the hunting room in the country estate of the brandhof of Archduke Johann of Austria or the antler collection of Count Arco in his palace in Munich, Germany. There are hundreds of drawings of creative antler decorations by the Austrian furniture maker Joseph Danhauser (1780-1829). In 1851, chairs, chests of drawers and a sofa made of horns were exhibited at the Great Exhibition Of The Industries Of All Nations in London which were considered one of the great novelties of this iconic exhibition. This created a new lifestyle trend and fashion driven by the ambitious European middle-class and antler furniture disseminated into bourgeoisie households. One of the first designers is the German ivory carver and furniture maker H. F. C. Rampendahl who gained enthusiastic successes on several world exhibitions with his antler furniture. An antler bureau, a horn seating group or individual chairs, decorated gun cabinets, H.F.C. Rampendahl created a whole new design world for fashioning rooms. This prompted other designers in Germany Austria and USA to make antler furniture H.F.C. Rampendahl, Hamburg, P. There is no mistaking their beautiful and stylish design, which is certain to make it a treasured addition to one of the rooms in your home. Dimensions in inches: Height 3 feet, 6 inches x width 2 feet, 3 inches x depth 2 feet, 7 inches. Mahogany is probably one of the largest ‘families’ of hardwood, having many different varieties within its own species. Mahogany has been used for centuries in ship building, house building, furniture making etc and is the core structure of just about every 19th century vanity box, dressing case or jewelry box. It became more of a Victorian trend to dress mahogany with these decorative veneers, such as burr walnut and coromandel, so that the actual mahogany was almost hidden from view. Mahogany itself is a rich reddish brown wood that can range from being plain in appearance to something that is so vibrant, figured and almost three dimensional in effect. Although mahogany was most often used in its solid form, it also provided some beautifully figured varieties of veneer like ‘flame’ mahogany and ‘fiddleback’ mahogany (named after its preferred use in the manufacture of fine musical instruments). Cuban mahogany was so sought after, that by the late 1850s, this particular variety became all but extinct. Scottish leather These chairs are upholstered in top quality Scottish cow...

VICTORIAN HARROPS CHESTERFiELD BROWN LEATHER RECLINER DRINKS CABINET ARMCHAIR
Located in GB
Royal House Antiques Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this absolutely stunning, very collectable John Harrop, top to bottom restored, hand dyed Cigar brown leather reclining armchair with built in drinks cabinet to one side and bookcase to the other Please note the delivery fee listed is just a guide, it covers within the M25 only for the UK and local Europe only for international, if you would like an accurate quote, please send me your postcode and I’ll provide you with the exact price. This chair is a wonder to behold, I have never in all my time seen another, it screams Art Deco however it was made in the latter part of the Victorian era, the chair on the face of it looks like an Odeon armchair which in itself is rare, however, this is so much more, this would have been a gentleman's paradise, it reclines as mentioned, the left outside arm is a bookcase cabinet, under the of top of this side there is a sliding ashtray, this most likely wouldn't be used today but it is appealing that it hasn't been lost over time, the right side has a cupboard which when opened reveals a drinks cabinet, is that not just the most sophisticated feature you have ever seen on an armchair The inside of the cupboard door displays the original retailers plaque which reads HARROPS BETTER FURNITURE 89 91 & 93 PICCADILLY MANCHESTER, this is for John Harrop, a full bio of the great man can be read below This chair originally in a blue fabric, it has been stripped back to the frame which has been French polished, its then been upholstered with Italian Premium cattle hide russet leather that was applied plain, plain leather is signifacntly more expensive than pre-treated hide, it has then been hand dyed six times, antiqued, sealed waxed down and polished, this is now basically in better than new condition Dimensions for the armchair Height:- 85cm Width:- 68cm Depth:- 65cm fully reclined depth 100cm Seat height:- 44cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask. John Harrop was the next person to live at Heaton Lodge. In many ways he was the archetypal Victorian, living the English dream. He was born in a workhouse but ended his days a rich businessman rising to Lord Mayor of Manchester, and having several homes. He was born on the 1st February 1847 to John Harrop and Caroline Wharton in Ancoats. John and Caroline appear to have moved to Manchester from Hull, as his older sisters, Ellen and Ann, born 1842 and 1843 were born there. He had one more sister, Sarah who was born around 1849 The family moved to Dukinfield , then Reddish and as a boy he worked in the Stockport cotton mills. In order to earn extra money he took up an agency selling an illustrated Bible in parts. He was so successful in selling to his fellow millworkers, that he was soon earning much more than he earned in the mills, and so set himself up as a bookseller on Deansgate in Manchester. Even here he innovated, and commissioned portraits of political celebreties such as Gladstone and Chamberlain, and having them framed and selling them in their thousands at a handsome profit. His rapid accumulation of wealth can be seen by his frequent upward moves. In late 1870 he married Elizabeth Farrar, and was living at Old Road in Heaton Norris, moving by 1881 to 69 Reddish Road in Stockport, in 1891 they were living at Richmond Hill on Gatley Road in Cheadle, but they also had a property at Struan, in Storrs Park Windermere and 91 Piccadilly Manchester. 91 Piccadilly is still there and is now a Spar We can see how he rises in wealth through his declared occupations on the census. In 1871 he is a cotton mill warper, by 1881 he is a print dealer by 1891 he is a bassinette manufacturer and finally in 1901 he is a house furniture dealer. By 1906 he had become Lord Mayor of Manchester. However, he never forgot his humble roots, we can see that by his speeches and the causes he promoted. An autodidact, he was proud to have been able to send his seven sons to Manchester Grammar , and in a speech there, in contrast to the proud boasts of the preceding speakers he said: “The principal schooling I got, was at night-time in a barn. We paid a penny a week and took our own candles.” Harrops basinette and furniture became a nationwide chain of furniture stores, he had a factory on Bury street in Stockport and Harrops branched out from there. He was not only successful in business but also in politics and made powerful connections. On 24 July 1904, Winston Churchill attended a Liberal Garden party in Heaton Mersey in the grounds of Highfield, and stayed overnight with the Harrops at Heaton Lodge, Louis Botha, the first Prime Minister of South Africa also stayed there. Hans Geiger and Ernest Rutherford were also visitors. John Harrop also promoted worthy causes, and the grounds of Heaton Lodge were also host to many fundraising events, he was active in the Temperance movement , but my favourite of his causes is the Ada Leigh Homes for British and American Girls in Paris, the Manchester Guardian reports on 4 May 1911 that he held a fundraising garden party for the cause. This charity provided free accomodation for British Colonial and American Ladies in Paris. In 1908 Mrs Harrop is reported as to be organising food parcels for the unemployed of Manchester. Finally, we have Mr Harrop to thank for securing Platt Fields Park for the people of Manchester. For leisure, he was a keen salmon fisherman, holidaying often in Scotland, and all to ready whilst at his club, to relate his adventures to anyone willing to listen John and Elizabeth purchased Heaton Lodge in July 1902. They had eight children, Arthur, John Walter, William Gladstone, Maud Elizabeth, Frederick Hardy...

Antique and Vintage Armchairs for Sale on 1stDibs

Armchairs have run the gamut from prestige to ease and everything in between, and everyone has an antique or vintage armchair that they love.

Long before industrial mass production democratized seating, armchairs conveyed status and power.

In ancient Egypt, the commoners took stools, while in early Greece, ceremonial chairs of carved marble were designated for nobility. But the high-backed early thrones of yore, elevated and ornate, were merely grandiose iterations of today’s armchairs.

Modern-day armchairs, built with functionality and comfort in mind, are now central to tasks throughout your home. Formal dining armchairs support your guests at a table for a cheery feast, a good drafting chair with a deep seat is parked in front of an easel where you create art and, elsewhere, an ergonomic wonder of sorts positions you at the desk for your 9 to 5.

When placed under just the right lamp where you can lounge comfortably, both elbows resting on the padded supports on each side of you, an upholstered armchair — or a rattan armchair for your light-suffused sunroom — can be the sanctuary where you’ll read for hours.

If you’re in the mood for company, your velvet chesterfield armchair is a place to relax and be part of the conversation that swirls around you. Maybe the dialogue is about the beloved Papa Bear chair, a mid-century modern masterpiece from Danish carpenter and furniture maker Hans Wegner, and the wingback’s strong association with the concept of cozying up by the fireplace, which we can trace back to its origins in 1600s-era England, when the seat’s distinctive arm protrusions protected the sitter from the heat of the period’s large fireplaces.

If the fireside armchair chat involves spirited comparisons, your companions will likely probe the merits of antique and vintage armchairs such as Queen Anne armchairs, Victorian armchairs or even Louis XVI armchairs, as well as the pros and cons of restoration versus conservation.

Everyone seems to have a favorite armchair and most people will be all too willing to talk about their beloved design. Whether that’s the unique Favela chair by Brazilian sibling furniture designers Fernando and Humberto Campana, who repurposed everyday objects to provocative effect; or Marcel Breuer’s futuristic tubular metal Wassily lounge chair; the functionality-first LC series from Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret; or the Eames lounge chair of the mid-1950s created by Charles and Ray Eames, there is an iconic armchair for everyone and every purpose. Find yours on 1stDibs right now.
