Dutch Art Deco set of armchairs by J.L. Grubben, 1920s

About the Item

A rare set of very well made Dutch Art Deco chairs by architect Jacques Grubben. These chairs came from a set that was part of the meeting room interior of an auction house in Venlo (1928), designed by architect J.Grubben . Grubben (1884-1964) was inspired by 'De Stijl', but he was also influenced by Amsterdam School and the Hague School. In this chair there's cubist elements, straight lines, but also the rounded black stretchers at both sides and then the top of the backrest hints towards Amsterdam School. The design of the auction house by architect Jacq Grubben shows the same set of characteristics. The light red upholstery is from around a later date in the 1960s. About the architect Jacobus Lambertus Grubben was born on December 21, 1884 in Blerick. After primary school, J. Grubben was apprenticed at a carpenter and had lessons about architecture in the Netherlands. His travels took him to Belgium and France in 1906. Back in the Netherlands he settled in Jutphaas and from there left for Kassel, Germany and Switzerland, Zurich, in 1908. After living in Amsterdam for some time, he settled as an architect in Blerick on June 18, 1913. He had studied at various places: the drawing institute in Oudenbosch, the architectural college in Zurich and the Jacob van Kampen Institute in Amsterdam. Grubben owned a library with architectural and architectural history works. He was a productive architect. After the war, the Grubben bureau experienced its largest expansion. Grubben worked for 50 years as an architect and was influenced by several architectural styles . In the 20s and 30s, influences from the Amsterdam and the Hague School, Dudok and Kropholler are clearly visible. He did not stick to one style, but mixed and matched and moved on with the times. Bureau Grubben received its last assignment in 1961. Jacques Grubben passed away on January 9, 1964
