About the Item

A Chinese elmwood scholar's lamp-hanger armchair from the late 19th century, with carved splat, dark patina, curving arms and side stretchers. Born in China in the later years of the 19th century, this scholar's lamp-hanger chair called dengguayi features an elegant tall back, topped with a curving rail. The central section presents a concave-shaped pierced splat, decorated with a carved flower, followed by a mythical animal and a flaming motif. Two sinuous open arms with out-scrolling extremities are sitting on the rectangular wooden seat, while the armchair is raised on four straight legs connected to one another through plain side stretchers and is accented by a delicately carved skirt. The perfect contrast of shapes of the upper section, opposing the concave silhouette of the splat and the convex lines of the lateral supports, combined with the refined decor, will make this 1880s elmwood Chinese scholar's lamp-hanger armchair with dark patina a perfect decorative accent for any home, perhaps placed in an office, bedroom or living room.

Antique 18th Century Chinese Yoke-Back Armchair in Lacquered Pearwood
Located in Meer, VAN
Antique 18th Century Chinese Yoke-Back Armchair in Lacquered Pearwood. A stunning antique Chinese yoke-back armchair from the 18th century. A remarkable design - quintessentially Chinese and of monumental proportions. Should have been a chair for someone important. The design rooted in the Ming-style from several hundred years before this chair was created - showing straight and strict proportions combined with sculptural and flowing shapes all hand carved from solid wood. Remarkable to see a chair this 'boxy' could be so sculptural and dynamic in appearance. Also, this chair is quite comfortable to sit in. Whereas in Japan it was the custom to kneel on the floor or to squat on cushions, chairs were the rule in China from an early date - both for dining and relaxing. Chairs with arms were more honorific than those without and both kinds were for men - women sat on stools. The design of these antique Chinese chairs...
