About the Item

This “Lilla Eva” chair belongs to the Paradise Collection, crafted by Kerstin Hörlin-Holmquist during her tenure as a designer at Nordiska Kompaniet. The name draws inspiration from “Paradiset,” the Swedish term for Eden. Hörlin-Holmquist defied fleeting trends and public opinion, creating a distinctive chair shape that continues to gain popularity. The chair features an unmistakable backrest that seamlessly flows into the armrests. While the armrests are low, enhancing the openness of the seats, they still provide a cozy, embracing feel. The chair has been reupholstered in a grey linen blend fabric showcasing tufted backrests embellished with five symmetrically arranged buttons. The stained, tapered Beech wood legs harmonize beautifully with the sculptural and organic shape of the chairs. Kerstin Hörlin-Holmquist possessed a unique and humanistic design vision, and her unwavering commitment to her craft has made the “Little Eva” easy chair truly iconic. These chairs are in good vintage condition, showing normal wear consistent with age and use. They have recently been reupholstered in premium fabric. Dimensions: 27.55 in W x 30.51 in D x 32.67 in H Seat height: 15.15 in 70 cm W x 77.5 cm D x 83 cm H Seat height: 38.5 cm About the Designer Kerstin Hörlin-Holmquist was born on May 30, 1925, in Arvika, Sweden. She was a Swedish modernist architect and designer who graduated from Stockholm’s Konstfack in 1952, after studying and working in England. Often collaborating with her husband Erik Holmquist, they modeled and created designs together. A key principle for them was to test their creations in their own home before finalizing a project. Hörlin-Holmquist believed that both furniture and textiles should be kind and gentle, yet retain their character. She aimed for designs that possessed human qualities, adapting to their environments rather than standing alone in pompousness. Her time in England from 1946 to 1947, where she studied art history and became captivated by classic English upholstered furniture, significantly influenced her later work. Upon returning to Sweden, she attended Konstfack and began working with Nordiska Kompaniet shortly after graduating, eventually becoming a lead designer. Her timeless and iconic ‘Paradiset Collection,’ created during her employment at Nordiska Kompaniet in 1956-1957, showcases light and clean lines infused with graciousness and romance. Today, her designs are cherished collectibles, remembered for their ability to embody the spirit of modern living in the 1950s, all while maintaining her unique and humanistic vision.
