About the Item
A pair of gorgeous, impressive and rare Modernist iron strap vintage armchairs in wonderful, refinished condition. Likely made in the 1980s in continental Europe, these fabulously striking, assuredly robust and yet seductively sleek armchairs will add timeless sculptural elegance and bold sophistication to any outdoor setting.
Impressively sized and reassuringly heavy, these stately armchairs are made of iron and due to their wide iron-strap seats and superbly sweeping backs are – rather surprisingly – extremely comfortable, even without a cushion! The gracefully flowing lines and over-curving back and arms are particularly stunning, and the large seats and broad backs make them the ideal statement garden chairs.
Stylistically, the armchairs have an enhanced Post-Modernist 1980s assuredess to their more dainty design predecessors by Francoise Carré and Russell Woodard. Similar to Mario Papperzini for John Salterini and Herbert Saiger for Woodard’s more muscular 1970s iron strap chair designs, this astounding pair touch so many design boxes: Bauhaus, Mid Century, Brutalist, Modernist, French Machinisme, Italian Modern, Hollywood Regency, Post-Industrial, Avant Garde – the list goes on…
All in all, these are superbly striking and very comfortable armchairs, which won’t fail to impress or add boldness, sophistication and interest to any setting. We have four of these magnificent armchairs in total; this listing is for two chairs, and we have another listing for all four chairs if you’d like the complete set of these stunners.
CONDITION
These gorgeous armchairs are in excellent vintage condition. Structurally sound, they’re extremely solid, sturdy, reassuringly heavy and comfortable. Unlike most similar vintage outdoor chairs, which show unattractive signs of age and weathering, ours have been professionally refinished. This was done by shot-blasting to remove the old paint and rust and then refinishing in extremely durable powder-coating, with the finish in a dark matte charcoal to match their original finish. Overall they’re a fabulous and extremely rare pair of stunning outdoor vintage armchairs in wonderful refinished condition and if well looked after, they should remain so for generations to come – please see the photos.
