Charles Dudouyt "Ladder Back" armchairs In oak and rush seat, France 1940s This very comfortable ladder back chairs with armrests were crafted in Normandy, France circa 1940. Built in oak and beechwood and attributed to Charles Dudouyt, these armchairs sits on round turned legs and features two ladders in the back embellished with round finials at the top. The wide and deep seat is upholstered with the original hand woven rush. These country armchairs are in excellent condition with a rich walnut patina. The versatile and sturdy low "chauffeuses" chairs are meant to be placed close to the fire place to stay warm, but could also be used for occasional seating.

    Patinated oak and rush turned chairs by Charles Dudouyt, France 1940s These chairs were designed by French designer Charles Dudouyt, who created these carved oak chairs as 'fireside' chairs, hence the low seats. He crafted wooden furniture in strong Art Deco/ brutalist forms, using playful geometries and construction methods more in keeping with the robust Arts and Crafts Movement. This chair features significant and fantastic decorative fins atop the backs and armrests. The sphere-shaped terminals aren't the only ornamentations on the design; the shape of the two splats on the back, the carved stretchers, and the spherical feet are all decorative features that make this pair visually arresting. In later turned chairs, like these chairs, rush seats were common, especially in America, and the same goes for Europe, where wicker and rush were widespread and popular materials.
