About the Item

The period of French history known as Directoire was a difficult time, as it arrived at the end of the Revolutionary War. Furnishings in this style, such as our pair of painted armchairs (circa 1900), were less ornate than offerings from past regimes, as pieces associated with the monarchy were reviled. Typically, when carvings were seen, they were Neoclassical in nature. Gray was a fashionable color during Directoire, making a logical palette for the linen upholstery of these chairs. In addition to the plush cushion, the seat back and two small manchettes are covered in gray fabric with piping. Embellished by modified à cornes (horned) backs, with canted ends terminating in half-pyramid finials, the backs slightly taper before meeting the wide outswing arms. In a similar fashion to the arms, the skirt curves outward and is adorned with beading. Square dies, carved with rosettes form joineries above fluted legs with arrow feet. The gently sloping arm stumps are also fluted, as are the short volute hand rests. Finished with a very well-distressed white and gray paint (added more recently), these Directoire-style armchairs can be placed in a bedroom, living room, or library.
