A Pair of "Penguin" Armchairs by Louis van Teeffelen, The Netherlands 1960s

About the Item

In the mid-century design era, often a piece of furniture would combine only two materials or colours – creating tension and harmony without fuss or superfluous ornaments, and these armchairs are perfect examples of this sentiment. This exceptional pair, created by the renowned Dutch designer Louis van Teeffelen for WéBé, embody the essence of the mid-century modern movement with a distinct, sculptural flair. Familiarly referred to as the "Penguin" armchairs, the design is inspired by the organic and fluid shapes of nature, with a backrest that resembles the graceful curve of a penguin's wings. The chairs are expertly crafted from warm, rich wood, a hallmark of mid-century furniture, and feature finely executed curves and smooth transitions between the arms, seat, and back. The design emphasizes comfort and functionality, with wide cushioned seats and a slightly reclined backrest that provides excellent support. The wooden frame, which has been skillfully shaped to create an almost seamless look, adds an elegant and natural touch to any room. The faux leather upholstery enhances the striking visual appeal, ensuring the chairs not only serve as functional seating but as statement pieces within a living room or lounge space. With their signature fluid lines and sculptural presence, these "Penguin" armchairs combine the refined simplicity of mid-century modernism with an inviting, human-centric design. The overall design is a piece of art that exudes both sophistication and comfort, offering a timeless blend of aesthetics and craftsmanship that remains highly sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts alike. Their enduring popularity underscores their status as iconic examples of mid-20th century Dutch furniture design. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Upholstered Armchair by Bas Van Pelt for My Home, The Netherlands 1940s
By Bas Van Pelt
Located in Utrecht, NL
This elegant armchair by Dutch designer, Bas Van Pelt is a classically luxe model with a level of craftsmanship that’s immediately visible to any eye. The construction of this rare 1940s design is simple at its core, but thanks to the details, it is a unique representation of early Dutch modernism. While Bas Van Pelt's creative work was primarily influenced by the 1920s straight lines dominated by The Hague School, this armchair is the result of his more mature design era, which was primarily dominated by natural materials and more curvature. While made of solid wood, this armchair has an open feel to it thanks to the airy arrangement of the arms and legs. The curved lines of the armrests are beautifully crafted and follow the raised seat’s angle. The curves nicely contrast with the straight lines of the frame, keeping it from appearing too strict. Apart from the expert woodwork, the upholstered seat and back stand out as well. The light bouclé fabric is tightly fitted around the frame, and the seat’s thick shape is an especially pleasing element that offers plenty of comfort both figuratively and literally. The overreaching backs further enhance the back’s widening shape and thus allow the individual loops of the yarn to stand out. The block legs blend seamlessly into the back and form a gentle angle. Thanks to the well-chosen proportions and the luxurious upholstery, this armchair provides great comfort. This model can be easily used as an accent chair thanks to its characteristic details, but can also complement a wide variety of interior styles with it refined and elegant style. Bas van Pelt’s progressive designs were, in many ways, ahead of his era. The Dordrecht-born designer’s furniture models are quite rare, a few are preserved in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam for modern art, contemporary art, and design. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The chair has been reupholstered recently in a premium bouclé fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information. Pair of "Edouard" Armchairs by Guillerme et Chambron, France 1960s
By Votre Maison, Guillerme et Chambron
Located in Utrecht, NL
The “Edouard” lounge chair is often described as a “caquetoire”, or a conversation chair. This type of seating was an armchair style which emerged during the European Renaissance in France. As the name suggests, this type of chair was meant for sitting for elongated periods to chat. Generally, these chairs were also highly regarded for their aesthetic value as well, which can also be said about these exceptional chair models. The “Edouard” is a sculptural model with a blonde oak frame that is characteristic of the French designer duo. The design showcases the wide variety of shapes and forms of the solid oak frames, from the curving lines to the straighter spindles comprising the backrests. Naturally, a conversation chair needs to be first and foremost functional and comfortable, therefore the backs are slightly tilted, and the seat raised, aided by the generous seat and back cushions. The French caquetoire chairs...
